International Taiji Sword Festival Talks Movies, TV & Novels usually create a distorted view of history & life in previous times. So that practitioners of Chinese swordsmanship can better understand & appreciate the world our art arose from, Philip Tom will present twotalks at the Festival. The first "Life & Times of the Yang Family" is designed to provide an understanding & personal view of just what it was like to life during the 19th century in China. What was the social structure, the economy like, what trades employed the average man? This talk will answer these questions & more, providing a clear understanding of the world that produced taijiquan & the swordsmanship we're studying. The second talk, "The Qing Battlefield", will be a through discussion of arms & martial realities of the day. During the life of the first two generations of the Yang Family, China was wracked by rebellion & war. Yang Luchan & his son's began their careers as military trainers during the 19th century in China. What was the social structure, the economy like, what trades employed the average man? The second talk, "The Qing Battlefield", will be a through discussion of arms & martial realities of the day. During the life of the first two generations of the Yang Family, China was wracked by rebellion & war. Yang Luchan & his son's began their careers as military trainers during the Taiping Rebellion (1860's). Yet, arms & tactics had change little from the previous centuries. A through knowledge of the swords & other arms of the period will provide practitioners of Chinese swordsmanship with a better understanding of how our jian methods developed, why & in response to what armaments. Both talks will be presented evenings at the Narva Castle Museum for the enjoyment of the Museum Staff, General Public & Festival Participants. |
