Donating to Great River Taoist Center

The first thing all donors want to know is, is their donation tax deductible? Yes, Great River Taoist Center was founded as a not-for-profit educational organization in 1984. We are incorporated in the District of Columbia and have been granted charitable status by the IRS under section 501 (c)3, of the Internal Revenue Code. GRTC is also listed with Guide Star, Donor's Guide to the Chartiable Universe.

Making a donation is as easy as writing a check. Donation should be mailed to our Main Branch at:

You can also give to Great River through the United Way campaign using payroll deduction at work. When you fill out your United Way pledge card there is a place for you to name an organization to contribute to. Just fill in 'Great River Taoist Center' and our Washington, DC address and the United Way of the National Capital Area will take care of the rest.

You can choose where you want your donation to go to work by designating which fund you want your donation donated to. There are three choices; our Land & Building Fund, General Account or Foundation. Money donated to the Land Fund goes directly into an account used to pay the mortgage on the Center's 100+ acre retreat site and for future building projects. The Retreat is a long term project aimed at building a Dao Guan for advanced practice. The mortgage will be paid in full in less than two and a half years. Site preparation in on going.

Money donated to the General account is used to support various projects. Most recently donations have been used to renovate our new Center we purchased in September of 2000. We reinforced the walls, added lighting, mirrors and a shock absorbing floor. In the past, donations have been used to send senior students to China for advanced training and to help train Russia and Estonia students at our Great River branches there. When there is no specific need or project, unrestricted donations are transferred to the Land Fund.

In 2001, GRTC established the Great River Foundation. The goal of this Foundation is to provide financial support for the Center's property mortgages, specifically our office condo in downtown DC. Donations to the Foundation are never used, but remain as principle in the Foundation. Only the interest from this principle is used to support our purchase of the condo we currently own and possible future expansion.

To designated how you'd like your donation used, simply write: Land Fund, General or Foundation on your check memo. It's as easy as that. You will receive a receipt by mail for your tax records.
